THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(September 18, 1993)
Latvian emigre' Alexander Shabalov seems to be adapting to
his new home in Pittsburgh rather well. A former member of
the Latvian Olympiad team and the winner of the strong 1992
Biel Open, he already had one American victory (the Hudson
Invitational) under his belt until recently when he captured
the 1993 US Open title in Philadelphia, as well.
Unlike most other American tournaments, the US Open is
traditionally run as a one game per day, two week event--a
format resembling that of many international tournaments.
Shabalov, a frequent participant in such events prior to his
emigration, clearly felt at home in Philadelphia.
His score of 8-1, good enough for the $5,000 first prize, was
one-half point better than six players who finished tied for
second at 7.5-1.5. "Heavyweight" GMs Gregory Kaidanov, Alex
Yermolinsky (this year's World Open winner), John Fedorowicz,
Nick deFirmian, Roman Dzindzichashvili plus IM Ben Finegold
each won about $1,400.
Unfortunately, organizer Bill Goichberg lost about $10,000
due to the low turnout of less than 400 players, according to
John Donaldson in INSIDE CHESS (1993 Issue #18).
Shabalov demonstrated his sharp attacking style in the
seventh round against a Senior Master.
